Gym Heroes is 132 cards. That is more than Base Set and Jungle put together, spread across fifteen 9 pocket pages, and it is the set where a half finished binder stops being readable. Once you have sixty cards in and sixty missing, you cannot tell what you still need without a list.

This kit is a printed placeholder for every card, numbered and in set order. Slide a placeholder out, slide the real card in. The binder looks finished from the first day, and the page count never changes.

Five holos hiding in plain sight

Gym Heroes has nineteen holos, not fourteen. Cards 15 to 19 are holo Trainers: Brock, Erika, Lt. Surge, Misty and The Rocket's Trap. Gym Heroes was the first set in the game to print them, and collectors who only chase holo Pokemon walk straight past five of the nineteen.

All nineteen are laid out on the checklist cover in a holo grid with their own tick boxes, so you can see the chase list on one page.

Built for the two print runs

Gym Heroes had a 1st Edition run and an Unlimited run. Every card gets a tick box for each, so you can track one, the other or both. The cover explains the tell: 1st Edition carries a black Edition 1 stamp to the left of the artwork and is the earliest and scarcest run. Unlimited has no stamp.

Three things this checklist will save you from

• Cards 15 to 19 are holo Trainers. Five holos that are not Pokemon. Easy to miss, and they are on the cover grid so you cannot.
• Several commons appear twice under the same name at different numbers, Brock's Zubat being the usual example. Both belong in a master set, and the checklist gives each its own numbered row so you do not tick one and think you are done.
• Rocket's Moltres 12/132 has a catalogued Black Dot 1st Edition variant. Check yours before you trade it away.

Sizes and printing

Placeholders cut to 63 x 88 mm. A real card is 63.5 x 88.9 mm, so the placeholder sits flush in a standard 9 pocket page without bowing the plastic. Print at 100% or Actual size, never Fit to page. Use matte cardstock between 220 and 300 gsm. Matte beats gloss, because gloss grips the inside of the pocket and is a nuisance to slide out. Fifteen sheets covers the whole set, so print in two batches if your printer tray is small.
